Bogotá Colombia, 24 Nov 2007
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe called off talks between Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who have held political hostages for years in an attempt to gain power and conduct a prisoner-hostage swap. One of the hostages is French-Colombian citizen Ingrid Betancourt, seized by the FARC in February 2002 while campaigning for president of Colombia. Three others are US anti-narcotic agents. Dozens of others include Colombian police, soldiers, and political activists. Clara Rojas, Ingrid Betancourt's long-time friend and campaign director, who was also captured in 2002, became pregnant in captivity and has since given birth to a son, Emmanuel.
