Below are three examples of how smartphone brew technology has evolved:

1. The end of proprietary applications. With so many operating systems on marketplace, apps must be designed to work over a variety of platforms. An iPhone user can play Words With Friends with someone who uses the new Droid. An Office suite for business tools is available on most mobile operating systems. The need to develop applications with more general applications has prompted independent designers to get creative and work hard on their projects.
2. Expanding the market. Forget being a Mac or a PC, people are smartphone users or not. How often have you heard someone express surprise or frustration when their friends can’t receive a picture message? Or, on the flip side, someone who lives on their Droid gets irritated when someone calls with elaborate directions. “Just text me the address and I can plug it into my GPS.” New brew technology means that people with feature phones can enjoy all the advantages of smartphone devices — and more. FOX Television recently launched a Brew application for users to watch select programming right on their phone. Customers can stay tuned into the news via ticker and text alert.
3. Brew devices. Brew teamed up with Samsung to create the Reality, a more affordable touchscreen phone with a social networking focus. This feature is one of the main reasons buyers cite buying a smartphone. The ability to bring it to the masses through Brew technology will bring down costs and open up new possibilities in phone design, allowing us to leave the smart-or-not dichotomy once and for all. A slider keyboard and a camera with Instagram-like effects makes the Reality stick out from the mid-range competition. Users can post instantly to Facebook and YouTube, and unlike some Google phones that stick you with un-deletable apps, Brew technology allows for almost endless customization.

Brew devices are surely a sign of emerging and future trends in mobile design and applications. The unique software and platforms put power back into the hands of the consumer. Often, new phones are saddled with an experimental operating system. The bugs may take weeks or months, along with several downloaded updates, to resolve, resulting in frustration and an inability to use the device to its true potential. Brew platforms, by opening up smartphone functionality, not only will create more affordable phones, but may just make it a little harder for companies to justify outrageous prices for new models. When apps are available across a multitude of platforms, the motivation to spend hundreds of dollars on a sleek white iPhone melts away for some customers. Instead, the mobile world will join the ranks of Netflix, offering customizable a la carte entertainment so that the consumer can design a phone that fits his or her specific needs and desires — nothing more, nothing less.

The Menus module is one of those wonderful features, but by default, it doesn’t allow to specify some attributes of the  menu items, like the “target”.

In my opinion, the WordPress administration area design is not usable (and not 508 compliant) and some buttons and options are difficult to find because they are normally in gray letters over light gray backgrounds. After seeking for around half an hour, I finally found the way to specify the target attribute of a link on the Menus module. I decided to share this because I think it’s something difficult to find but also something very easy to activate:

Step 1: Screen Options.

Go to the “Menus module” , under “Appearance”. Then, click on the “Screen Options” button, located on the top right corner.

Step 2: Enable Link Target option.

Then, under “Show advanced menu properties”, check the “Link Target” option.

Step 3: Specify the target attribute on the WordPress menu.

On the Menu items options, a new field will be displayed – Link Target –  to specify the target of the link.

At last count, there were over 14,000 plugins available for download at the WordPress plugin repository – a lot of options for the average online publisher!

While many plugins can extend the capability of your blog in ways that make your life easier, it’s important not to get carried away. Having too many plugins on your WordPress site will actually slow it down.

And a slow site can mean a low search engine rank.

1. The All-in-One SEO Pack

Known for being one of the most-downloaded WordPress plugins, the All-in-One SEO Pack lets you do all of the following:

If you haven’t received comment spam yet, you will. That’s why every installation of WordPress comes with the Akismet comment spam-blocking plugin.

But if you’re running a commercial site, Akismet isn’t free. WP-Spamfree, on the other hand, provides an effective, cost-free alternative to Akismet.

4. Subscribe to Comments

Think about the last time you commented on a blog. If you argued a point or made a statement that invited some kind of response, you probably wanted to know when others commented on your comments, right?

Subscribe to Comments lets your readers opt-in to email updates whenever someone responds to their comments. Having this plugin encourages discussion and keeps readers coming back.

5. SexyBookmarks

Other than subscribing to your blog, what would you like readers to do every time they enjoy one of your posts? You want them to share your content with others so that you get more traffic and connect with a wider audience.

SexyBookmarks makes it easier for readers to share content across social platforms. Popular alternatives to the SexyBookmarks plugin are ShareThis and Sociable, which offer similar functionality.
